The Upholstery Cleaning Survey

This step is the most important step in the upholstery cleaning process. It allows us to gain the information required to thoroughly and professionally clean an item as we examine the construction, fibre-type, backing materials and fillers. All of these factors combine to determine the best method for cleaning an upholstered item and the correct chemicals to get the very best results possible.

Aside from the intricacies of cleaning upholstery, we look at each particular stain or spot to ensure the appropriate removal technique and solution is applied. We have access to a huge array of specialist cleaning solutions and need to know exactly which one to employ.

We also need to assess the dye stability of each colour on the face fibre of the upholstery. Each dye has a different chemical make-up and therefore suitable cleaning procedure. It is of paramount importance to ensure the dye stability before any cleaning is undertaken to ensure no colour run, bleed or loss. We are proud of the fact we have never caused any colour loss or bleed, as our testing procedure is very thorough.

Finally, we examine areas of damage and ensure the integrity of the upholstery construction is maintained throughout the cleaning procedure. All of this can be completed in only 5 to 10 minutes.

Upholstery Cleaning Method - Dry Soil Removal

We commence our cleaning process by removing the vast majority of sand, dust and dry soil using an industrial vacuum cleaner. We achieve this by covering the entire item at least four times in perpendicular directions (as recommended by the National Carpet Cleaners Association). This method employs a turbine driven hand tool that vibrates the surface of the upholstery to release any dust, sand or grit from under the surface of the face fabric. This tool also efficiently removes pet hair and any solid material bound to the face fabric.

With the majority of the dust, sand a grit removed from the face fabric, we then employ a specially designed hand tool down the edges of the item. This tool recovers any items down the side of the couch or item, which we place in a bag for each client. You would be amazed what we have found down the sides of sofas and chairs.

Upholstery Cleaning Method - Spots and Stains

We then pre-treat and work on all the areas of staining with the appropriate chemical agents to remove that particular stain. These include, enzymes, carefully selected solvents, oxidising agents, reducing agents and a variety of non-ionic and anionic detergents. Any residue left in treating a particular stain will then be removed during the cleaning process of the entire area.

Upholstery Cleaning Method - Pre-spray and Agitation

We move on to treat the entire upholstery item with the appropriate cleaning agent selected during our survey. This is allowed to penetrate the face fabric and removes any grease or oils adhered to the fibres. At the same time, any remaining soil and dust is transferred to the cleaning solution ready for extraction in the following steps.

The cleaning solution is carefully worked into the fabric, ensuring the most amount of dirt possible is released and subsequently removed. We can achieve this using a specially designed brush, by working the solution from 4 different directions. With more delicate constructions, we employ sponges and soft bristled brushes to gently groom the face fibre and allow a gentle cleaning action.

Upholstery Cleaning Method - Extraction

The upholstery is then extracted with a powerful hot water extraction machine. This works by first injecting an antibacterial deodoriser into the fabric at high pressure. This dislodges any remaining soil from the surface of the fibre while killing any germs that are present. The injection step is followed by extraction of the dirty solution using a high vacuum to leave the item as dry as possible and odour free.

The machines we employ use twin vacuum motors to remove the vast majority of water and ensure minimal drying times. Only a very small amount of residue is left on the surface of the fibre to ensure an enduring cleanliness of your upholstery.

The extraction of upholstery is achieved using a specially designed hand tool that allows maximum suction while employing minimal amounts of water. This ensures our clients upholstery is dry as quickly as possible, often within only a couple of hours.

Upholstery Stain Protection

After the upholstery has been cleaned and the surface of the fibre prepared, we can move on to apply fluorochemical stain protector. This barrier can last up to 5 years and coats each fibre to inhibit soiling and staining. It allows our clients to simply mop up spillages as it prevents the fibre absorbing oil and water based stains.

Upholstery Cleaning Method - Grooming and Finishes

We complete our work by grooming the face fibre to ensure the best visual finish possible. This leaves the upholstery looking fresh and restored, but most importantly clean!

Finally, we polish any of the surrounds of the upholstery item to give the entire item a new, fresh and clean look and fragrance.
